Everyday in May: Rant About Schools

Today's prompt: "Rant about something. Get up on your soapbox and tell us how you really feel. (a pet peeve, a current event, a controversial topic, something your husband or roommate or neighbor or boss does that really ticks you off)." My rant is about the schools.

The schools are teaching children less and less of what they need to know to actually get by in life, all while spending more money per child. That is because the money goes to special interests and bureaucrats who would rather use the money for themselves, for getting reelected, and to ensure that children learn whatever propaganda they want them to learn rather than the things they actually need to know in order to survive and be successful in the world.

I'm afraid that the world is going to fall apart once these kids take it over. It is already happening. There are young adults graduating from high school, and even college, who have no idea how to wash their own cars, cook a meal, or even use a microwave. Don't even get me started on what they know about politics, the economy, or what their congresspeople are doing, what they believe in, or even who they are. Many of them don't even know who the vice president is. I just hope that some of these young people will wake up at some point once they actually find real jobs (if that ever happens).

This is not about either political party. Both parties are guilty of ruining schools. Perhaps the problem to begin with is political parties. If politics were about solving problems rather than towing party lines, maybe we could -- guess what?! -- solve some problems!!

  1. I am one of these young adults you wrote about.

There is no doubt about two things: first that schools everywhere in the world are hell bent on ONLY teaching things that don't matter too much in the long run. And secondly, the only things the schools teach seriously are the government/religious/some-other propaganda.

Your belief about people like me getting a bit real in their heads after finding real jobs is true, at least in my case. I learnt more in 11 months of my first job in 2011-12, than in 4 years of my college degree. Both about my job and about people.

  2. Yes schools are becoming less about learning real world skills. Sad but true. People need to make politicians and education decision makers take notice. We have to protest and make our voices heard. There's no other way.

  3. Preachin' to the choir, K. If the kids don't have responsible parents able to pick up the overwhelming slack (which so many don't) we're screwed.

  4. Schools only work so well as the parents involved. Unfortunately, this generation of parents has found it easier to protect kids from bad grades and failure than to actually teach their kids how to deal with things like that.

  5. Schools have a curriculum that they stick to and nothing else matters! I do think parents should teach kids some stuff but it would help if the schools did more real life classes too :)
